Spotlight

Guest Lecture: Heike Raphael-Hernandez (Universität Würzburg) - The Black Atlantic and Beyond: Old African vs. New African Diaspora

  • Thursday, 18 January 2018, 6:00 pm New: Thursday, 1 February 2018, 4:00 pm
  • Lecture Hall C/ HS1 (Chemistry Building)
  • Black Studies in the American Studies often refers to slavery, the Civil War, Jim Crow laws, the KKK, and the Civil Rights Movement by Martin Luther King, Jr. Yet, African American history is connected to the larger concept of the Black Atlantic and the African Diaspora. Recently, scholars have begun to differentiate between the Old African and the New African Diaspora. These concepts help us to understand the history of people of African descent in the U.S. In this lecture, we will look at the origins of the Black Atlantic and the importance of the different related concepts for historical and contemporary Critical Race Studies.
  • For more information, please see here.

Reading: "Poets to come"

Poets to come January 2018 Flyer.png
  • George McGovern Foyer (EF 50)
  • 25 January 2018, 6 p.m.
  • “More than a century after his death, American poets still talk about, talk to and back to Walt Whitman. So palpable is Whitman’s presence that it is difficult for an American poet to define himself or herself without direct reference to him,” writes Ed Folsom in the “Introduction” to the volume The Measure of His Song, a collection of global voices responding to Whitman. Indeed, this most significant poet, whose subjects ranged from the city to the landscape, from violence and war to love and empathy, envisioned poets as his audience, and asked them to continue his legacy.
  • This semester, a group of Dortmund students responded to Whitman’s call. Come and join us for an evening of creative engagement!
