Course Description

In this course, we will be reading the short stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer, a Polish-American author who wrote in the Yiddish language. Through the medium of English translation, he became postwar America’s most celebrated Yiddish author, eventually winning the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1978. As an artist, he was influenced by Jewish traditions of storytelling and mysticism. His narratives are simple and not-so-simple folktales about characters who inexplicably find exuberant joy in the cruelest of circumstances. In a word, love and good humor were among his proudest possessions as a Yiddish writer living in exile.
The text used will be Collected Stories of Isaac Bashevis Singer.
Scott Meyers is a guest lecturer from the University of Virginia.
