Course Description

In this seminar, we will read theories of history from William Godwin‘s essay "On History and Romance“ (1797) and Charles Brockden Brown's "Walstein's School of History" (1799) to statements by the New Historicists in 1990s Cultural Studies; we will analyze exemplary historical storytelling from the historical romance of around 1800 to historical TV series of the 21st century. And last but not least we will deal with media of historical storytelling from novels across illustrations to computer animations.

Course Requirements

Requirements: The theoretical and fictional texts will be made use of in a group project which will be introduced, discussed, and developed cooperatively, with the whole seminar.
In addition, there will be compulsory film screening sessions on some Tuesdays starting at 4:00 p.m. which are obligatory
